Yesterday we celebrated Erik’s 7th birthday!!!
The day started with candles, muffins and gifts. The most popular gift was without doubt the cartoon Bible that we found when we were in Kuala Lumpur.
At the end of the school day his birthday was celebrated with his class. Erik had “ordered” a spiderman cake. Birthday celebrations in Indonesia have a certain way of being done. First his teacher prayed a long prayer for him. Then he was supposed to cut up the cake, with good help of course. The first slice of the cake is supposed to be shared with the people who are to be given the most honour, meaning the elders. The teacher encouraged him to give his parent the first spoonfuls. Erik is still too norwegian and would rather share it with his school friends and brothers. His little brothers are also too norwegian still, and refused to eat cake of a spoon that somebody else has eaten off!
After that all the children lined up to shake Erik’s hand, wish him happy birthday and get their cake and drink. It was very nice for us to be able to be in his class and take part in the celebration!
For dinner that day we had taco shells, which was Erik’s choice, for the first time since we left Norway. That must be the most “exotic” thing we have found in the new hypermarket so far!
In the afternoon we had a new party with some friends and some of the neighbour boys.
